I don't always check Southwest, so my sample is not scientific. But when I do? It's never cheaper.

And is often well more expensive.
My latest data point:
My brother is going to a wedding in Austin next month. Cheapest available for the dates he is flying is $198 RT on United. Cheapest available on Southwest is $304.
