I just tried Will's configuration against a level 23 with no troops.... lost 3 hoplites in the first round; defender lost 4 out of 7 walls.

I usually send 20 cats, 20 marksman, and 20 mortars and end losing zero. I see now that I can at least cut the mortars to 18 since the rest are in reserve.
