"family unity" share.

so my dad unexpectedly died a few days after I turned 17. the only will we found was written before he married my stepmother a few years prior. in it, he left almost everything to me, the only minor child (of 7 kids).
for the sake of family unity, I ended-up signing over most of what I would have received from cash assets and the sale of the family home (after stepmother's share, etc., was taken out), so it could be split among my siblings.
I questioned it some at the time, and upon retrospect/knowing what came after (including that my 3 brothers did not share profits from an investment opportunity my dad started before he died), I'm not sure it was the right-for-me thing to do. but it was the generally right thing to do, for at least the hope of no lifelong contentiousness.
(there's more ick involved, but I've shared enough. ;p)
