but I'm sure Paramount wanted Kirk and company used since they are names and I'm betting they aren't going to be limited by what comes next in Star Trek continuty. I'm betting Old Spock sets them up somehow so that we won't know what comes next and that the timeline is changed.
Plus one thing they could do is skip to the time of what would have been season 4 and 5 and tell of missions during that time before The Motion Picture....
JJ has said he's become a huge fan of Trek, which is a good thing. I do think Star Trek needed a fresh set of eyes on the project. Much like Nicholas Meyer was when he came on board for Wrath of Khan...and looked what happened there....
