From below: Do you say Merry Christmas to someone on Hanukkah? I think perhaps some of that could be avoided

when *on Christmas* you're wishing people Happy Holidays especially if you're well aware of their religious beliefs. I find that to be mildly rude to the person. I certainly wouldn't say Merry Christmas to a Jewish person on Hanukkah simply because I don't subscribe to their faith.

it's not a perfect analogy, because "Holidays" doesn't exclude Christmas, like Christmas excludes Hanukkah. -- nm
