I truly believe there is a major financial problem right now, but I also think it's getting much worse because of the psychological effect on consumers. The sale of the bailout by Paulson/Bernanke was done so poorly, and with such grandiose negative verbiage (true or not doesn't matter) that people locked all their cash under their mattress and have kept it there.
