I'd also add that it depicted gangsters very differently from previous gangster films.

In The Godfather they are relatively normal people living something like the American dream.
And at the end of the movie, Michael willingly coverts to a life of crime - at a price, but a price he is willing to pay. Most movies before then ended up with the gangster paying a different price - going to jail or getting shot down ina hail of bullets.
