If by mp3s you mean iTunes songs, yes you can.

My iPod was stolen over the summer, I still download songs to my computer to listen to. (Until I get around to getting a new iPod.)

No, but regular mp3s are playable on iTunes though. -- nm

In order to dl and use ITunes songs/shows you have to use the ITunes app.
