Seeing pictures from the Newark airport debacle now. Makes me think that airports need to be entirely redesigned.

1 - Bigger check-in areas.
If you're going to have huge lines of people checking in, then you need to have room enough for these people to line up, and room enough for people to get around them.
2 - Improved security gates.
It should be impossible for people to walk "in through the out door".
3 - Accommodations
If - several times/year - people are going to end up having to spend the night at your facility, you should have places for them to sleep. Even if it's like they do in hurricane zones where they turn gymnasiums into refugee centers, you need thousands of cots and large rooms to put them in. And a system where you can identify the people in these rooms and usher them to through check-in when their time comes. More effort shouldn't be placed in building slots to park my car than a place to park my can.
