actually there is some special software that does a whole lot of manipulation and morphing automatically

its some german stuff, I think called 'portrait' and you click markers for the eyes and mouth and ears, then it not only smooths the skin texture but gently morphs the face closer to the ideal ratios of beauty (the 1:1.19 something like that)
