The first one is true, and was bothering me for most of the movie.
The second one ... I don't believe the movie itself resolved if the substance was floating, or if it was *being floated*. I don't believe it was stated that the Unobtanium is what was causing the Hallelujah Mountains to float. The corporation was certainly depicted as heartless, but this is roughly analogous to the open pit mine (and mercenary force) in The Rundown.
If only the humans had enslaved the Na'vi, then the movie would be very different, and the extreme mercenary force would make somewhat more sense. They would be there to subjugate, not repel.
