We had a bad contract for Lowell to deal with. You need a plan to deal with that reality.

They signed Beltre because starting Lowell at 3B was apparently never even close to being an acceptable plan. Even in the Ramirez trade, $9M of his $12M was considered sunk cost. Now it's just figuring out the best way to utilize him. Dumping Kotchman and considering the $3M of his contract that isn't sunk cost as a decent price to pay for someone with his offensive tools to play some backup and get 200-300 ABs sounds like a fairly workable plan to me.
