i saw it as Bendis's way of starting fresh... i dont think they could have segued into the bigger stories without it (spoilers)

disassembling the avengers was one thing, but losing most of the mutants became paramount to things like the Civil War and Secret Invasion (especially the latter as it let everything fall into place for the Skrulls)
