In extra time yesterday in the match I didn't understand why Rodgers went for a long throw on his first attack, why didn't he just throw a short pass,

on which the odds of completion are higher I imagine, and inch his way up the field in short bursts until he's within field goal range.
He wasn't on target with a really long pass all day, and instead he's left with 2nd and 10, deep in his own half where if it got to 4th down anyway they'd be kicking the ball away.
Who makes those decisions anyway. The time surely to try for a long pass up the field is surely when yuor own teams field position is such that if you lose the ball through interception or whatever, that the other team is out of range for a field goal.
Seemed like an unnecessary waste of a first down going for that length of pass going by their % success rate.
