Airline fare question...

Is the price differential between a 7-day advance purchase discount fare and the walk-up fare worth booking a ticket in advance (I don't know exactly when I'll need to travel, but I'll need to be in Pheonix late next week) and possibly paying the $150 booking change fee if and when I need to change it? Or should I wait until I know when I need to be there and just book it then? Or do they charge you the full fare difference on top of the $150, which would kind of moot my question?
