i book travel all the time. Generally speaking, i find if i have to put someone on a plane in under 48 hours, i end up paying *way* more.

book in advance, take your best guess at the time and cross your fingers.
airlines all do different things - if you change your flight and the current fare is higher, i've had them charge me the difference, i've had them change for no fee (even if there should be one), and i've had them change for the $150 (most common).
it's a guessing game half the time.
