IMO, the story doesn't have to be the most important part of every movie

Some paintings have a strong message, other are just beautiful.
Many movies are very important for the art even if they have terrible or no story at all. Avatar is one of those movies, where the story is not the most important thing
To me it's like a rollercoaster. I ride a rollercoaster because of the emotions it triggers, not because I wonder how it will end
