Obviously a matter of opinion. Personally, I did find the pacing a bit of a problem.

That was my complaint of the film. I didn't at all think that the characters falling in love took place within a 15 minute montage. In fact, I would say it was more developed than most love stories. The montage was about them learning about each other and him developing an appreciation of their culture. I thought they moved very cautiously into an appreciation of each other and love. I really thought it was done quite well. I thought the acting was generally pretty good. And I thought the army guy was fairly cliche, but that was sort of the point. He was an extreme that other characters played off.
