Conan is the sympathetic character here. NBC made promises to him to keep him there. Leno could have been sympathetic here because he essentially

was pushed out of a successful show when he wasn't ready to go, but he lost the sympathy when he made it clear that if things didn't work out with his new show a) it would be all the network's fault and b) he'd be fine moving back to the 11:30 slot. He could have kept his integrity by refusing the 11:30 slot and deciding to move on, but he chose to force Conan into that decision.
