the race is 3 laps. Anakin is nearly a lap behind when his speeder starts; and he catches up a full lap within the time it takes the leaders to do 1 lap.

So he's twice as fast as them...then can't pull away from the leader for a full 3rd lap.

Mind you, it's been 10 years since I sat through this fully, but I seem to remember that being the circumstances.
