I thin there are two main reasons people are mad at Roberston specifically for this quote.

1. It's getting lots of coverage. I (thankfully) don't hear what Robertson has to say most of the time, and therefore can't get upset about it.
2. People tend to have (and demand) tact. We're used to the Roberstons of the world saying fornicators will burn. But to piss on a country that just had a huge, horrible natural disaster, where many, many people are dead? That's uncharitable and mean, and plays against our sympathetic nature.
