IIRC they *used* to play 2 days in a row, travel, 2 days in a row, then alternate travel and one game.

in the 70s, the first round may have even been 3 games.
and re: 4x7, with so many bad teams, you're getting a *lot* of crappy games and many people losing interest by the end of the second round
