this is how i tried to explain to her which program does what:

ZoneAlarm protects your comp from unwanted network traffic (in and out) - like the guy at the door at the club
AVG checks files that go in and out (mail or download) - like the guy inside who checks that you don't bring anything dangerous
SpyBot and AdAware are cleaners that check your cookies and other files for malicious things - like the guy inside who kicks out those who molest others.

  - AVG can run a scan of all files to look for things already on the disk. Also go to trendmicro and do the online scan. HighjackThis! is a great tool... - zork Nov 19, 13:10
