Separation anxiety coincides with a new intellectual skill called object permanence. Babies now remember objects and specific people that are not present.

The peak of separation anxiety usually takes place in the second half of the first year, but there is great variability in this. There is often a second peak in the second half of the next year, as language skills improve, and toddlers have developed a rich, multimedia array of ways to communicate with you that strangers just don't understand.
