Is getting to board a plane earlier really that much better?

For me it's the difference between standing more vs. having to sit in a cramped space while so much humanity nudges around you. You get to check out the asses of half the passengers while luggage after luggage gets raised over your head and you pray it doesn't come crashing down on your lap.

You can find the slightly roomier seats and get your luggage placed quick and you can aim for the seats next to tiny people so you aren't as cramped. -- nm

I'm guessing when seating isn't assigned, if you're late you'll have to sit up the back, which means you'll be sitting around just as long

In the case of Southwest, you are picking your seat, so it affects whether you get window or aisle, and the row you sit in, not to mention securing
