I don't know so much about Spanish, but one of the huge advantages of English is that it's easy to speak it poorly and still be understood.

in French and Spanish, you have to get your genders right or you could say something completely different from what you meant. In English, that's not an issue at all.
There are people all over the world who know just a little bit of English and can get surprisingly far with what little they know.
