The reason I think that (some) private jets (particularly fleets of them) are unnecessary is the same reason I can't justify buying a boat.

The associated costs:

- The item itself, and the ongoing financing thereof
- Taxes
- Insurance
- Storage
- Fuel (or in the case of the boat, sails)
- Maintenance (both ongoing, and expensive yearly cycles)
- Crew

So that "$20,000" number that I and others have tossed around, while it no doubt includes some of those expenses, can't possibly be a fixed value - the per-trip expense is a moving average based on how often, and for what purpose, the item is used.

For example, if I buy a boat and only sail it on weekends, I can't take the yearly cost and divide it by the number of days in the year, and multiply that value by the number of days I sailed to come up with the cost of an outing. I have to divide the annual cost by the number of days it was used, and use that cost. I'm sure that's what they're doing here, of course, but at the same time ... tying it to a fixed "per flight" number is very misleading.
