Theoretically, the minority needs a mechanism so that a simple majority doesn't overwhelm by decree.

Of course, the filibuster wasn't supposed to be used as a partisan weapon, but rather a method of last resort to prevent truly bad legislation from being enacted.
Whether what's happening now is that or a principled stance depends on your POV.
