In response to "I never watch late night TV, but all this ST talk has made me midly curious. Can someone give me the readers digest version of what happened on NBC? -- nm" by Subversive

NBC gives Jay Leno a daily show at 10pm. Conan takes the Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon takes the Late Night show...

Jay's ratings aren't good, but that's not too big a deal, because his show is so cheap to produce compared to a CSI or ER or whatever, that Jay can have a tiny rating and still make lots of money for NBC.

The problem occurs when Jay's low ratings start killing the ratings of all the local affiliates' nightly news broadcasts. I'm thinking it was pressure from the affiliates that forced NBC's hand here.

NBC's first plan of just giving Jay his old timeslot back, moving Conan back past midnight and who knows what with Jimmy and Carson Daly, didn't make anyone happy.

Like Bery said, find a clip of Seth Meyers breaking it down on the last SNL episode's Weekend Update for a good analogy.
