I think part of it goes to BBC's requirement to play 50% British acts (I believe)

As a result, they are playing a different mix of songs than the US radio (though they are certainly playing plenty of stuff that is popular in the US).
But taste differences definitely exist as well, yes. I sometimes think the Brits have better taste.
Then Susan Boyle comes along.
