i have had quite a bit of experience with corporate jets.
for direct flights from one major city to another, and longer turnaround times, even first class is usually the way to go - unless you're loading up the plane and plan to work on board or the like.
for multi-city trips - big cities or not, or for smaller places with no direct flights, the time saved for highly paid executives and the ability to fit in multiple meetings in the same day or two can be worth the expense.
i don't know if the auto corps own their jets outright or not. if they use something like NetJets (i know them), there can be a significant cost savings over the course of a contract, depending on what they choose.
in any case, as hyde and some other said, to me the biggest part of this particular issue is the PR aspect. and i question the corporate culture/mindset that would have failing companies not cut back nonessentials, even for appearances' sake alone. especially when they're seeking "loans."
