when i was in university, i worked at a little dessert/cafe/wine bar place. this one guy (probably 30s or 40s, but he seemed old then) used to come in fairly regularly and have a glass of wine and just chat with the waitresses. he was perfectly nice, had no isse with him at all, but i used to wonder why he was always alone.
found out later (like, 2 years later) that his wife had been really ill then (hospitalized) and i think he just went out to not sit home and brood, and to not be around people asking 'how are you?" all the time.
i'd completely forgotten about him.....
