The destruction here isn't due to the strength of the quake, it was only a 7.0, it's because the buildings are so poorly built.

This same quake strikes San Francisco and you've probably got less than 100 dead.

To be fair, IIRC, if the epicenter of the quake was as close to SF as it was to Port au Prince (with the ensuing aftershocks), the damage would still

The epicenter of the '89 quake was a bit further away, but the 89 quake was .1 bigger and still only killed 63 in a region with over 7 million people. -- nm
