I can understand to a degree of the 'message' but the idea he'd punt to Pelosi & Reid is beyond words

it's a fundamental misreading of the strengths of the man.
His staff is either incompetent or blinded by the position that they misread this. And if he doesn't realize this, it's going to be bad from here in...if he does realize it; he's gotta reorganize the staff around him.
Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is too vital a thing to mess up this badly.
