What I mean is, plenty of people (on both sides of the debate) care more about ideology than they do about outcomes

There are plenty of countries (including Canada) that provide universal public coverage and have healthcare outcomes similar to the US, for about half the cost. I can think of several others that do the same using a private system (the Netherlands) or a hybrid between public and private (Australia), again for about half the cost

None of these systems are perfect, but it's obvious that there are several paths to a healthcare system that provides a similar outcome without devoting a sixth of the economy.

But most people in the debate or watching it, whether they are concerned about ensuring a public option or keeping government out of Medicare, are unwilling to compromise on their favoured model.
