TH had a set of epic armour for each classes. They dropped very rarely but you got an ach for getting the whole set, so it was something to work for.

Basically it involved killing named enemies over and over, and you hoped to get lucky.
Borderlands doesn't have that satisfaction of finding the "best" stuff, so it's sort of pointless to farm, unless you really really want to try to find a better gun.
