I think the article linked earlier (by Beaker?) should be encouraging, too.

They're putting a lot of resources into scouting, and trying to be the organization scouts want to work for. If they are successful in what they want to do, they have a shot at contention. They've also shown a willingness to spend money. I don't know if that fits with the current management's plan, but I think they still have the resources to do so. If they can lure those free agents, which might be a hard sell for them.
