I work in an ER and the fear of being mandated to stay is one of the worst parts of the job. There needs to be a minimum staff and if people call in sick or don't show and they can't get someone to come in they have to start making people that are there stay.
Sure, you won't be asked to work 24 hours but 16+ happens all the time.
My hospital will send people to pick you up if the trains and buses aren't running. They'll pay for car service, anything to get the staff in to work and get people home.
