Another one that's tricky is Best Picture: Avatar, or The Hurt Locker?

The argument for Avatar is 1) to please the general audience, 2) it was quite universally praised by established film critics (also long before the public backlash from haters) 3) it sweeped the Golden Globes and 4) can't give 'em all to Bigelow, how wouldn't that hurt Cameron's reputedly massive ego
Hurt Locker on the other hand is universally acclaimed, but is about Iraq/US occupation and that's always tricky. And besides, Bigelow is a shoe-in for Best Director, or isn't she?
So I thought it was a given that Avatar wins BP and Bigelow wins BD. But then I received the following in my inbox just now, from Tom O'Neil on Facebook:

The only way Avatar loses is if there is significant Cameron backlash. -- nm

UP FTW!!! (seriously though, THL deserves the win if we're comparing it to Avatar) -- nm

I saw The Hurt Locker friday and was disappointed. It's my least favorite amongst the 8 best picture nominees I've seen -- nm

I think the only aspect that really harms Hurt Locker is it's tiny box office.

It's naive to think that only 2 out of 10 nominees have a shot.
