If I remember my Kingdom Come, Captain Marvel destroyed the nuclear weapon by grabbing it and calling "SHAZAM!" at the last moment. He blowing himself up, he saved the other heroes. The TPB even had a happy ending with Supes and WW hooking up.
Alex Ross already said that the Kingdom Come storyline in JSA isn't exactly a sequel to the mini-series, but can it be considered a sequel at all? I mean, it drastically retells those last moments. In the JSA storyline, Captain Marvel doesn't destroy the bomb. It explodes, and the earth is destroyed.
