I still don't think that's the message the movie was trying to portray. Forgive me since it's been 6 months since I've seen it, but (spoils)

the aliens are treated as a sub-class or race. (easy symbolism.) The main character tries to do the right thing, but ends up still treating them like a sub-class of citizens. Eventually he turns into the alien, and his family turns his back on him, and he realizes he's going to be the same - racism reversed.

He grew some, but it was more the idea of "what if you were one of them" that is suddenly thrust upon him and now "he's one of them."

That's not a very good description, but I found it to be pretty deep.

Much deeper than Star Trek.
