he punched the dad because now he was "one of them." He wasn't trying to make race relations better in when they were moving the aliens out - he was just trying to keep it civil. Now he was becoming "one of them" and knew how they were treated. Your perspective would become much more self-served if you were suddenly put in the postition of being the one slighted.
