because he would now be treated as an alien. There was no guarantee that he wouldn't be saved. He became more selfish - in much the same way the aliens could be called "selfish" - because there was no guarantee he would go back to "normal."
(I almost wrote "shellfish" instead of "selfish." interesting.)
