There is absolutely no reason to go see Avatar in 2D. I don't actually recommend IMAX myself.

Digital 3D I think I found was the sweet spot personally where the world looked amazing but not so crisp that it got fakey. (FakeIMAX looked like that.)

I saw it 4 times so take that for what it's worth.
