rinsing the cut (in half) onion under water is supposed to mitigate the crying effect. Don't know if it would mitigate the hand-smell effect (with which I am familiar).

Red onions are great fresh (on salad or sandwich). I would never intentionally use them in most sauteed cooking applications, though. -- nm

Because their flavor is milder, they lose their effect when cooked. I have used them in a pinch, though. -- nm
