It certainly had a pace and style I was not expecting. I happened to like it, despite not quite understanding why.

David's warning that it "isn't for everyone" was, I suspect, mostly content-based, but I think it applies to the writing style too. The first 300 pages honestly are a pretty straightforward laying out of fact and the enormous cast of characters before it starts to hone in.
