"used to drink but stopped shortly after college" screams "he had a drinking problem in college and just doesn't want to admit it" to me.
That being said, it's really not about the alcohol, it about his sociability. Plenty of people go out to bars or hang out with friends and don't drink alcohol. Most such locations have water or coke available.
I also kind of wonder about her, given how she's trying to just make this about the drinking. I also find her phrasing of "only once or twice a weekend" amusing. I imagine she's trying to say she doesn't go out during the week, but it comes off as "sure, I drink during the weekend, but only on Friday and Saturday". Isn't "once or twice" pretty much the limit of how many times you can go out and drink in a weekend?
