It helps for everything but uphill. You don't want to have too much glide or you'll backslide. For double poling, glide is critical.

You put the gliding wax on the ends, the grippy sticky stuff goes in the middle under the feet.

yes indeed. For us low-rent skiers, we use "waxless" skis which have some treads for the kick, then we add glide wax.
