You put the gliding wax on the ends, the grippy sticky stuff goes in the middle under the feet.

At least in Classic style. One of the announcers was going on and on about it.

yes indeed. For us low-rent skiers, we use "waxless" skis which have some treads for the kick, then we add glide wax.
