yes indeed. For us low-rent skiers, we use "waxless" skis which have some treads for the kick, then we add glide wax.

the fancy skiers do the custom wax thing, which is better. My first skis were wood skis, and I got into the waxing. it was really fun.

For Freestyle, there's no kick phase in the stride. It's like skating. The skis are all edge, and they need glide all over.
